Season 5

As Long as We're Together



Synopsis:
The Ingalls family move to Winoka, where Mary will now be working as a teacher at the blind school. Charles and Caroline both get jobs at the hotel where they live, and Laura makes a new friend - orphan Albert.
Carrie moments:
- Laura is told to help Carrie to the water closet, but she is too busy with Albert, and when she finally takes the time to help Carrie it’s already too late. Poor Carrie! What an embarrassing moment!
- In the hotel room, Carrie tries to help Laura hang the dresses in the wardrobe and the heavy wardrobe falls over her! Good thing she wasn't hurt!
- At dinner, Carrie uses a bad word and gets into trouble! She sure isn’t having a good start in Winoka!
- When it’s time to start school, Alice Garvey (who will be teaching) is holding Carrie’s hand on the way there.
- Before Mary's birthday party, when they are all hiding in the kitchen, Carrie ends up next to the bowl of frosting, and manages to taste it without anyone noticing.

The Winoka Warriors



Synopsis:
The school kids make a bet against the kids from the private school - to beat their football team! Albert is sure they’ll win since they have Luke, who is bigger and stronger than any kid on the private school team. But then Luke is offered free tuition at the private school.
Carrie moments:
- Carrie is not acting her age at breakfast. She announces “all done” and Ma helps her take off her bib! Strange…
- When Laura says she is going to be a teacher and help Mary at the blind school, Carrie says “I think I’ll be a teacher too, and help Mary”.
- Carrie suggests “The Snakes” as the name of the football team.

The Man Inside


Synopsis:
Laura makes friends with a new girl in school - Amelia Bevins. On the way home Laura and the other kids are making fun of a fat man, not realizing he is Amelia’s father. Mr. Bevins overhears Amelia telling her mother she’s ashamed of him, and makes up a story that he’ll be leaving town to work for the railroad, and moves into his supply room at the blind school.
Carrie moments:
- Episode does not contain many scenes with Carrie…

There's No Place Like Home


Synopsis:
The children are trying to raise money to have fireworks on the 4th of July, but they are having a hard time getting people to donate money. Then Toby Noe wins 5000 dollars, and promises to pay for the fireworks. But Mr. Standish is doing his best to stop the fireworks.
Finally the Ingalls, Garvey and Oleson families decide to move back to Walnut Grove.
Carrie moments:
- Carrie is doing a good job cleaning up in her “room”. For once she has her hair tied back, so it won’t get in the way when she’s cleaning.
- When Carries goes to the outhouse it falls over, and she calls” Help, pa!”. Pa is seems really worried, but she’s ok.

Fagin


Synopsis:
Charles buys a calf, and gives it to Albert to raise. Laura starts feeling neglected by Charles, and when Albert overhears Caroline discussing it with Charles, he decides to run away.
Carrie moments:
- Carrie is looking pretty scared when Albert and Denzil fight, and soon closes her eyes so that she won’t have to look at it. She's quick to tell Ma that “Albert's got a bloody nose!” when they come home.
- Just like Charles and Albert, Carrie says she wants to have her supper in the barn, but she’s not allowed to.
- When Ma tries to explain that even though Albert promised Carrie they’d pick berries tomorrow, he might not be able to, since sometimes people have to break their promises, Carrie objects “not Albert”.

Harriet's Happenings


Synopsis:
Walnut Grove gets its first newspaper - The Pen & Plow, run by Harriet Oleson’s second cousin Sterling Murdock. Mrs Oleson starts her own news column- Harriet’s Happenings, but soon turns out to be using it to spread nasty gossip about the people of Walnut Grove.
Carrie moments:
- Carrie leaves the school house together with Laura, Albert and Andy, but when they get to the newspaper she’s not with them anymore!

The Wedding


Synopsis:
Mary and Adam are getting married, and Charles and Caroline go back to Winoka to attend the wedding. But when they start to talk about having children, Mary gets worried. How can she possible take care of a child when she is blind?
Carrie moments:
- When Ma says her baby is getting married, Carrie of course is surprised and asks "Grace?!".
- Carrie says she’ll never get married, since it makes Ma sad. When Laura explains that Ma is crying because she is happy, Carrie replies "I’ll never understand grown-ups".
- Carrie says she can take care of baby Grace while Ma and Pa are away.
- Charles comments that when Carrie was little she did like the creek, and he had to pull her out of it many times. On the show we’ve only seen her fall in once, and that time Pa wasn’t home.

Men Will Be Boys


Synopsis:
Andrew and Albert are tired of being treated like boys. Albert insist that since he is doing a man’s work, he shouldn’t have to do any chores, and Andrew tells his parents he doesn’t want to go back to school. Their fathers decide to put the boys through a test, in order to teach them a lesson.
Carrie moments:
- Carrie helps Grace with her bib, and Pa thanks her.

The Cheaters


Synopsis:
Mrs. Garvey is very disappointed to see that her son Andrew is doing poorly in school, and decides to take Nellie Oleson up on her offer to help Andrew study. But Nellie soon reveals her secret to success to Andrew - she is cheating.
Carrie moments:
- Carrie is running home from school together with a little blonde girl. Looks like she's made a new friend!
- Carrie says she did "fine" on the test, even though she didn't take it. She claims that since she didn't take it she couldn't have done bad!
- At recess, Carrie is jumping rope with some of the other girls.

Blind Journey


Synopsis:
The Winoka Blind School is in trouble. The building is being sold to Mr. Standish, and the school will have to move. Adam and Mary write to Ma and Pa to ask for help, and Reverend Alden comes up with the idea of the blind school moving into Mr. Hanson’s old house, which is now owned by the church, but still empty. Joining the Winoka school is another blind school, led by a Hester Sue Terhune.
Carrie moments:
- Poor Carrie is having trouble with her homework. She says that she hates "dibision", and when Albert doesn’t understand she explains it - arithmetic! Laura tells her that she means "division", but Carrie says she still hates it. Albert says he likes it, but according to Carrie that’s just because he’s always getting As.
- Carrie is trying to stall her bedtime. Laura thinks her "God bless"-list is getting too long, and tells her to get to bed. Carrie then says she is thirsty, but Laura tells her she’s had 3 glasses of water already, and shouldn’t be telling a lie. Finally Carrie simply asks if she can stay up until Ma comes home, but Laura tells her no (since Ma might not be back until late, and Carrie has school tomorrow).

The Godsister



Synopsis:
When Pa has to go away, Carrie is feeling lonely, and only seems to be getting in the way of the other family members. But then one day she meets Alyssa - who looks just like her!
Carrie moments:
This episode is the one the mostly focuses on Carrie, and it has a lot of wonderful scenes - both with just Carrie, and with the imaginative adventures of Carrie and Alyssa! Some of them are:
- Pa telling Carrie a bedtime story.
- Poor Carrie trying to convince Andrew to pick berries with her - without succeeding.
- Alyssa takes Carrie to a place where the berries are as big as she is!
- Carrie is worried something has happened to her Pa, so Alyssa takes her to Heaven to see Saint Peter, to make sure Charles isn’t there. However, there’s a Jack Ingalls there.
- Carrie drops her penny, and complains that grown-ups make pennies so small so that kids will loose them.
- Carrie tells Pa about the surprise she had planned for him, liquorice - his favourite candy. But it’s Carrie’s favourite too, and she admits she ate it.

The Craftsman


Synopsis:
Albert becomes friends with Isaac Singerman, and is asked to be his apprentice. But since Mr. Singerman is Jewish, the other kids starts to tease Albert for being his friend.
Carrie moments:
- Episode does not contain many scenes with Carrie…

Blind Man's Bluff


Synopsis:
Jordan dreams of being a circus artist. His parents tell him they are getting a divorce, and shortly thereafter Jordan takes a bad fall, when he is doing one of his circus tricks, and says he can’t see. But Laura soon discovers his secret - Jordan isn’t really blind, he is pretending to keep his parents from getting divorced.
Carrie moments:
- Episode does not contain many scenes with Carrie…

Dance with Me


Synopsis:
Charles and Jonathan run into Toby Noe, and he comes with them back to Walnut Grove. Amanda Cooper strongly dislikes Toby, but he falls for her right away! Meanwhile Laura has a crush on Jason, but when she finally comes right out and asks him if he likes her, he says no, even though he really does like her.
Carrie moments:
- Carrie is happily skipping to school! Looks like she’s in a great mood!
- When the family is eating dinner together with Toby, Carrie is drying the dishes. After that Ma tells her to get started on her homework. Poor Carrie!

The Sound of Children


Synopsis:
The Garveys go back east for a month, and a new teacher - Miss Elliott - arrives. Albert likes her right away! Meanwhile, Mary finds out she’s going to have a baby, and decides to write to Adam’s father to let him know he is going to be a grandfather. Mr Kendall comes for a visit, and asks Mary and Adam to come and live with him in New York, where Adam can go to law school.
Carrie moments:
- Mr. Kendall has brought a special wine from 1865, and Carrie comments "that's older than me! Didn't they have any new ones?".
-When Mr. Kendall says the wine needs to breath, Carrie looks at it for a while and then says "Mr Kendall? It's not breathing. I think it's dead.".

The Lake Kezia Monster


Synopsis:
It’s finally summer vacation, and Laura, Albert and Andrew are looking forward to spending time with Kezia. But Mrs. Oleson has decided her family needs a summer place, and buys Kezia’s house, which has been put up for auction since Kezia hasn’t been paying her taxes. The children decide to help Kezia get her home back
Carrie moments:
- Carrie is sitting next to Ma who's reading a story to them, and then asks her to please read another one.

Barn Burner


Synopsis:
The men in Walnut Grove have decided to stick together and negotiate a fair price for their crops, but Mr. Larrabee isn’t happy with this arrangement and breaks the deal. Jonathan is furious with him, and goes to talk to him. But Larrabee gets angry with Jonathan for insulting him in front of his family, and heads out to the Garvey farm, where only Andrew is home. Larrabee pushes Andrew, who hits his head and is unconscious. When Andrew wakes up, he goes to find his parents, and when they return their barn is on fire.
Carrie moments:
- Episode does not contain many scenes with Carrie…

The Enchanted Cottage


Synopsis:
Mary is suddenly able to distinguish light, and believes she’s getting her eyesight back. Charles takes her to Mankato to see the doctor. Laura is convinced Mary will be able to see again, and together with Albert she starts fixing up the old Edwards’ house for Mary and Adam.
Carrie moments:
- Laura says she is going to tell Carrie to take care of Grace. Looks like Carrie is stuck being the babysitter again!
- Carrie is asking when Pa will be back - looks like she’s missing him!
- When Mary returns, she hugs Ma, and say hello to both Hester Sue and Albert, but she seems to be ignoring Carrie (who doesn’t say anything to Mary either). It looks later a bit like Hester Sue is trying to comfort Carrie.

Someone Please Love Me


Synopsis:
A man is sending Charles to buy horses for him from a man named Harper. Mr Harper insists that Charles stay with him and his family, and while there Charles quickly become friends with Harper’s wife and two children. It soon seems clear to Charles that Mr Harper has very little time or interest for his family.

Mortal Mission


Synopsis:
Two men sell mutton to the people of Walnut Grove, even though they think the sheep could have died from anthrax. Alice and Caroline both buy from them, as do the blind school. The next morning Laura and Albert are sick, and soon more people in town get sick too.
Carrie moments:
- Ma asks if Carrie can manage breakfast for Grace, and she says "sure, Ma". She also seems concerned about Laura and Albert.

The Odyssey


Synopsis:
Dylan is a young boy who is a talented painter, and who loves the ocean. When the doctor says he has leukaemia and is dying, Dylan tells Laura and Albert a secret - he is going to travel to the coast to see the ocean. Both Laura and Albert decide to go with him.
Carrie moments:
- It’s Carrie’s birthday! In the morning she happily gets out of bed and runs to the table with her presents. She calls to her parents that it’s her birthday, and asks if she can open her presents now. She is told she has to call to Albert and Laura first, which she does. When Pa goes out to try to find them, Carrie tells Ma that she just can’t wait, and Ma says she can open one present. Carrie finds the letter Laura has written to Pa, and objects - "but it’s not HIS birthday!".
