Alun Armstrong was born on July 17, 1946, in Doncaster (United Kingdom). His son, Joe Armstrong, is also an actor.
Alun played Thénardier in the original London production of Les Misérables in 1985, and reprised the part in the 10th Anniversary Concert.
In 1994 he received the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for the his performance in the musical Sweeney Todd. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his part in the short film The Childeater.
A big fan of Charles Dickens, Alun turned down a role in a Clint Eastwood movie to instead play the part of Daniel Peggoty in David Copperfield.
His movie career began with a part in Get Carter in 1971, and since then he has appeared in a lot of successful movies, like Braveheart (1995), Sleepy Hollow (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), and Van Helsing (2004), as well as classics like Black Beauty (1994), David Copperfield (1999), Oliver Twist (2005 - Alun was also in the 1999 mini-series!) and Bleak House (2005). He has also done TV guest star appearances on shows like The Storyteller (1988), Inspector Morse (1992), Married...with Children (1992) and Tales from the Crypt (1992).
