Michael McCarthy was born on June 5, 1966, in Turner’s Cross (Ireland). He began his career at the Cork Opera House at age 15. He got a teachers diploma in drama with honours from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He then went on to study at the Stephens College in the USA (on a scholarship). After he graduated he was with the Okoboji Stock theatre in Iowa. Since then he has appeared in a number of musicals in the USA, United Kingdom and Ireland, including A Little Night Music, Cabaret, Camelot, Inkle & Yariko, The Desert Song and The Phantom of the Opera.
On television Michael appeared in the mini-series Tenth Kingdom (2000), and could also be seen as Second Priest in Jesus Christ Superstar (2000 (this production was also released on dvd & video)). He has recorded two successful CDs; Broadway (1995) and Living for the Moment (2001).
Michael’s Les Misérables experience started with the parts of Combeferre and Factory Foreman in London (1991), but he soon moved on to the part of Javert. Michael has played Javert with the American National Company in San Francisco and Shanghai, as well as in several productions in both the United Kingdom and Australia. He was also part of the Scandinavian concert tour. In 2003 he was asked to play Javert in the final Broadway performances. In the 10th Anniversary Concert he appeared as Factory Foreman
