Craig Schulman is known to have played the part of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables more times than anyone else in the whole world - almost 2000 performances! He started out as Brujon in the first national tour (USA) in 1987, and was also the understudy for the part of Valjean. In 1988 he took over the part completely. Craig then went on to play the part on Broadway (January 1990 - January 1991, August 1991, June 1993 - October 1993, June 1994 - January 1995, January 1996 - September 1996, March 1998 - September 1998). He has also played Valjean in a Canadian tour (June 1992 - February 1993) and a Singapore tour (January 1994 - April 1994)! He was also Valjean in the third national tour (September 1996). In 1995 he was the United States’ Valjean in the Les Misérables Tenth Anniversary Concert in London.
Craig has been in a large number of productions - both in musicals and opera, including: Evita, Fiddler on the Roof, The Secret Garden, The Phantom of the Opera, Jekyll & Hyde, Carmen, La Bohéme, Madama Butterfly and Guys and Dolls. He is also the creator and producer of the concert series Broadway Nights.
He has also released an album called Craig Schulman On Broadway, and appeared on the TV series Guiding Light, All My Children and One Life to Live.
Craig is married to Monica Robinson, who is a voice teacher, and they have two sons - Eric and Matthew. Sadly, their daughter Jenna passed away in 1998, at the age of 6. In her name, a scholarship fund called Jenna’s Dream has been created, with the purpose of providing scholarships to Yorktown Stage’s Summer Arts Camp program, as well as scholarship money to high school students who are planning to attend a performing arts program in college.
